Design for Peace’s workshop created the opportunity to bring together professionals from different backgrounds to think about the rebuilding of Ukrainian territory in the post-war situation. Having worked in the field of architectonical heritage protection for years, and especially on the example of the post-2012 Emilia Romagna’s earthquake restoration, the focus has been to define and explain possible strategies for the integration of the lack on an urban scale.

For me, working on the “Design for Peace” project was not just another experience – not just an exchange of skills and professional vision.
The most valuable were the emotions we experienced and their boundless manifestation during the creative process – from complete mutual understanding and synergy to sometimes opposing opinions and decisions for which each of us had to fight and convince each other. This vivid intertwining of our cultures, mentality, different generations, and most importantly, the common desire to do something useful, important, and necessary for my Ukraine, has led us to become not just colleagues, but very close and dear people. I am grateful to fate for bringing me together with excellent professionals and, above all, people with sincere feelings and open hearts. I believe that our interaction will not end here and we will be able to realize many more things together in future.

Our experience with Ivanna goes far beyond this workshop: with Ivanna we built the path that led to the birth and development of the project Design for Peace.
Beyond the final results that the workshop will return in, we believe that the most interesting and noteworthy thing is the process that all together we managed to activate. Design for Peace is a project that combines creativity and cooperation in an attempt to define a vision for the post-war reconstruction of Ukrainian cities.
A project that, perhaps with a somewhat visionary optimism but in our opinion proper, looks at the reconstruction and preservation of the architectural heritage of Ukraine using our strongest weapons: creativity and design. We are sure that our adventure with Ivanna is just at the first stage.

The timeline runs fast, since 07.11.2022 planning has known few pauses. Distances leveled off, remote work became linked to in-presence work, as languages and tools consolidated with each other and Ukrainian culture entered the heart of the project.
A unanimous perception: Design for Peace has rewritten proximity; there are no hosts and guests.
Instead, there is a constant and attentive dialogue, between panels made late into the night and the voice of a young Ukrainian architect back home whispers to herself: цей проект робить мене щасливим “this project makes me happy”.

My internship at the studio was a great opportunity to exchange experiences.
As the studio is engaged in architecture and engineering, and my specialisation is interior design, we exchanged experiences and combined our skills in social cooperation.

The presence of Iryna as an intern in our studio has been an occasion of enrichment for us and a way to try to make her feel better, after the escape from Kiev, due to the war. Her expertise as an Interior Designer helped us to commence a fructuose collaboration with the aim to put togheter her know how on interior projects with our experience on Sporting centers, that have been object of our projectsduring the last years.

Hello. My name is Anastasia and I am a refugee from Ukraine because of the war. After a long and difficult journey, crossing different countries, I arrived in Italy. The first six months of adaptation were very difficult for me. The project “Design for peace” became my salvation: it gave me the opportunity to work in my specialization and helped me feel alive again. I cannot say that it is easy: there are tight deadlines, little basic information and communication problems with Ukraine. But I am madly happy to have a job, to collaborate with Italian colleagues and to do such a great thing for Ukraine.

ABC+ welcomed the opportunity to participate in “Design for Peace” with great enthusiasm. The project offers new possibilities for the growth of the team from many points of view; first the possibility of mutual cultural exchange, social and professional with the scholar to which is added the possibility to contribute to the beginning of a new future for the Ukrainian population.
The real purpose of architecture and the city is in fact for us a social, relationship and community issue.
