PROGETTO

STATE OF ART

Educational building with a gross surface area of 6000 m2: the building has a modernist architectural feature and was built in the 1990s, spread over three floors above ground and has a closed courtyard conformation, a free plan with an internal courtyard , an entrance on stilts and ribbon windows on almost all the facades. On the night of July 5 to 6, in the educational complex on the street Valentynivska, 2 was a direct missile hit. Building A with a total area of 6,000 m2 was completely destroyed as a result of the powerful explosion. In particular, the central hall with a wardrobe, the museum of the history of the university, the editorial office of the newspaper “Teacher”, a meeting hall, three lecture halls, a laboratory of technical teaching aids, part of the premises of the scientific library. Out of 215 compositions of stained glass windows, which represent the history of the development of the university and the concept of the spiritual space of Ukraine,123 stained glass windows were completely destroyed.

PROGETTO

The municipal school of Korosten is located on the border of a city park frequented by local people. It is a complex of buildings consisting of two main buildings intended for primary and secondary school; to these are added a series of supporting buildings, later built, of very poor architectural quality. An underground museum dedicated to the Second World War and the Soviet occupation period was built between the city park and the school grounds. Among the exhibits stand out for their grandeur some tanks positioned along the access road of the underground museum. Most likely the presence of these gunships meant that the area was mistaken for a military base transforming a school building into a sensitive target. The bombing caused minor but widespread damage, making the buildings unusable.

CONCEPT AND DEMANDS

Through a series of interviews with the school managers we were able to un- derstand what were the expectations and the wishes of the client who asked for a total redevelopment of the school complex by creating from scratch the ancillary spaces and making the com- plex school also accessible to external users.

In particular, it emerged the need to in- crease the number of classrooms for secondary school and above all the desire to demolish and rebuild the sup- port buildings of the canteen and labo- ratories that at the moment appear as separate buildings located on the north side of the school garden. The two main buildings of the primary and secondary schools date back to 1917 and 1960 re- spectively and it was decided to keep them intact by limiting the interventions only to internal and external restoration – quests was the possibility of connect- ing all the buildings through covered and heated passages to prevent stu- dents from being forced to go out in the cold or or rain to reach the different buildings. The project therefore in- volves the creation of a covered con- nective element that unifies all the buildings and through a system of ramps, also solves the problem of dif- ferent levels and architectural barriers. The only major change planned in the secondary school is the transformation of the spaces currently used as theater in new classrooms to meet the demand for new didactic spaces.

PROGETTO

Korabel Kultural Park

PRIMO MOVIMENTO: ALLEGRO
EXPOSURE

KORABEL KULTURAL PARK is an urban regeneration project that will give new life, in the city of Mykolayiv in Ukraine, to a Multifunctional Urban Park.

KORABEL in Ukrainian means “ship,” a reference to the area’s port vocation and
at the same time an image of a space of togetherness, safe but moving and naturally leaning toward tomorrow. KORABELNYI was the name of the old Mykolayiv Cultural Institute, linked to the port and commercial identity of the city itself and the district where the institute was located.

Territorial Analysis

HISTORY OF THE MYKOLAIYV MUNICIPAL CULTURE PALACE “KORABELNYI”

According to Soviet ideology, one of the main features of a progressive Soviet enterprise was the presence of its own cultural center, within whose walls employees and their families could spend their leisure time, realize their creative potential.

Necessities Analysis

From the remote interview, with the director, a deeper cognitive picture of the building and the area of intervention emerged. Dr. Oleksiy Cheban led the working group through the rubble of the bombed institution, recounting the history of the Palace and the activities that took place inside.

Traces of the “old” palace remain, and faced with the dual options of preserving the memory of the pre-existence or tearing down the remnant to rebuild a contemporary palace, the community would like to demolish the building completely. In addition to the uneconomic fact of its reconstruction, the community’s desire to have an example of new architecture in Mykolayiv, particularly in the Korabelnyy district, is evident.

Aims

The project is grafted within a perspective that sees in the three main axes of the New European Bauhaus the central points from which to articulate the proposal. The concepts of sustainability, beauty and inclusion that animate the NEB projects are, within this juncture, scaled down in order to confront and be applied within a context that is highly vulnerable due to conflict and that requires the activation of strategies for the re-activation of the urban fabric from a social, economic and cultural point of view.

For this reason, the proposal intends to be articulated both on an asset of infrastructural reconstruction of the target area, as well as in terms of the mending of ties, relationships and interactions that have animated and will animate the processes that will run through the new multifunctional space.

SECONDO MOVIMENTO: ANDANTE
DEVELOPMENT

Generative scalable model

The KORABEL KULTURAL PARK could become the generative model within the establishing Mykolayiv Masterplan, which sees the One Works team, the Norman Foster Foundation and the Mykolayiv authorities working closely with the UNECE task force on five thematic macro- areas that form the basis for the analysis and identification of the strategies that will guide the drafting of the new urban masterplan: transport and infrastructure connections, green and water, innovations, social housing, industrial and productive development.

Network

The project is developed from the strengthening and activation of short, medium and long networks within which all actors at the local, national and extra- national levels will contribute to the regeneration of areas affected by the conflict.
Short and medium networks will be reactivated from 3 project actions:

Co-design: following a mapping of the actors who animated the multifunctional space before the destruction, all social actors involved in animating the area will be involved within a process of co- designing cultural programming in order to generate new synergies and bring into dialogue associations and groups working on different fronts.

Narratives: each reconstruction starts from a new narrative capable of shaping a new vision of the city. The possibility of being able to narrate the trauma of the conflict and at the same time the energies that
have been activated to rewire the social
and cultural fabric of the city represents a central point for new processes of urban regeneration. For this reason, the executive implementation phase of the project will contemplate at its core the creation of a small neighborhood newspaper in which citizens and those involved in the reconstruction will shape new ideas for the city.

Remarginations: the activation of the short and medium networks of actors engaged in the social and cultural animation of the city will pass through interventions scattered throughout the urban context.

Design criteria

The implementation of the KORABEL KULTURAL PARK will comply with the DNSH (Do No Significant Harm) principle, namely that of “no significant harm to environmental objectives,” which in turn is based on the 5 environmental objectives identified in the European Green Deal:

Climate change mitigation, pollution prevention and reduction

Sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources

Protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems

PROJECT

The National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (NTU “KhPI”) is the largest and oldest technical university in eastern Ukraine. Founded in 1885, it is the second-oldest technical university in the territory of Ukraine.

The Sports Complex of the NTU “KhPI” is a building separate from the campus in the Kharkiv Youth’s park. It is a relatively new building built in the 1980s in cement blocks. It has a lot of facilities, gyms and sport objects including an Olympic-size pool. It was equipped with modern changing rooms and shower facilities. Athletic competitions between NTU “KhPI” students and students of other universities took place here. Also the NTU “KhPI” students’ physical education classes were held here.
The Sports complex is one of the best buildings in the university, and the second largest one. The building shape is not uniform as it is more geared toward functionality. The lobby is decorated by two trophy-cases containing awards, won by NTU “KhPI” sportsmen.
The university has unique sports facilities, which in certain sports granted the status of the Center of Olympic training. Athletes successfully defend the honor of the university in competitions at the highest level. In total during 2005 to 2011 in the competition of the European level they won 46 gold, 33 silver and 62 bronze awards. In world competitions they won 36 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze awards.

On 24 June 2022, the Sports complex was destroyed by Russian shelling.

Plan of the Sports Complex

A big part of the structure of the Sports Department building remained intact, and we decided for technical reasons, to leave the functional arrangement of the spaces as it was.

The first area we worked on is the Swimming Pool, which was partially damaged by the blast wave. The destruction was minor, with damages to walls and floor cladding, and the destruction of non-load-bearing walls. We redesigned the pool area, renewed all the cladding and created a new design. This is an Olimpionic facility and the aim was to make it modern, leaving the functional asset as it was before.

The space is divided in functional areas that are easily recognizable from colours: a yellow cube hosts the audience and different shades of blue and green, that reminds all the hues of the water, characterize the areas for the athletes. The steel structure of the roof is colored in black , and complemented with the installation of new lights.

We focused our attention on the Sports Arena, which was the most damaged, since the ceiling, several walls and the interior are completely destroyed. This building was used for competitions and training in various sports.

The main task was to zonate the premises, rebuild the walls and ceiling, and re-design the interior. We designed a new roof made in wood, installed new ligths and added an electric curtain system which makes possible to divide the space in two or three different areas whenever needed.

The main colours chosen in this case were red and black.

Facoltà di Economia “V.N. Karazin”

THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF KHARKIV, NAMED AFTER V.N. KARAZIN, IS AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY FOUNDED IN 1804. THE CAMPUS COMPRISING EIGHT DEPARTMENTS WITH A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 1,700 STUDENTS REPRESENTS ONE OF THE OLDEST INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN UKRAINE AND EASTERN EUROPE. LOCATED IN THE CITY CENTER, THE BUILDING OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1916 AND 1926 AND ITS DESIGN ORIGIN IDENTIFY IT AS AN EXAMPLE OF UKRAINIAN ART NOUVEAU. THE SPECIFICS OF ITS ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES MAKE IT A LANDMARK IN THE NATIONAL CULTURAL HERITAGE, EXEMPLIFYING THE EVOLUTION OF UKRAINIAN MODERNISM. IT ESTABLISHED A NEW TREND IN FORM, TRIGGERED BY THE EVENTS OF WORLD WAR I AND THE AFFECTS IT IMPOSED ON THE COUNTRY AT THE END OF THE FIRST DECADE OF THE 20TH CENTURY. ARCHIVAL RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS INTENDED FOR THE FIRST UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ARCHITECT SERHIY TYMOSHENKO (1881-1950), ONE OF THE FATHERS OF THE UKRAINIAN MODERNISM, WAS COMMISSIONED FOR THE PROJECT. A PROPONENT OF THE WELL-KNOWN UKRAINIAN ROMANTICISM, THE STRUCTURE INCORPORATES SIX-CORNERED WINDOWS, CHARACTERISTIC OF THE DESIGNER’S STYLE. DUE TO THE OUTBREAK OF WORLD WAR I, THE BUILDING WAS NEVER COMPLETED. AFTER THE WAR IT WAS HEAVILY REMODELED WITH A MORE CONSTRUCTIVIST ORIENTATION BY ARCHITECT PAVEL KUSHNAREV. AT THE TIME OF COMPLETION, CIRCA 1925, IT WAS ONE OF THE CITY’S FIRST REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDINGS. IN THE YEARS TO FOLLOW IT HOUSED THE PEOPLE’S COMMISSARIAT, THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE AND THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS. CONTEMPORARY HISTORIANS HAVE RECENTLY CLARIFIED THAT SERHIY TYMOSHENKO A WELL-KNOWN UKRAINIAN POLITICIAN UNTIL 1917; WAS A MEMBER OF THE CENTRAL COUNCIL AND PROVINCIAL COMMISSAR OF THE KHARKIV REGION. HE WAS AUTHORIZED BY THE UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE DON ARMY FOR JOINT ANTI-BOLSHEVIK MILITARY OPERATIONS. IN 1919, HAVING LEFT THE CITY ON A BUSINESS TRIP, HE WAS UNABLE TO RETURN DUE TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE SOVIET REGIME. IN 1921, HIS ENTIRE ARCHIVE INCLUDING ALL DRAWINGS AND PLANS WERE STOLEN BY SOLDIERS IN RETALIATION. ONLY A RECENT IN-DEPTH COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TYMOSHENKO’S DRAWINGS SHOWED THAT THE CONSTRUCTION OF MYRONOSYTSKA STREET 1, I.E., THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, WAS HIS WORK. TO DATE, THE TOTAL AREA OF THE BUILDING IS ABOUT 6,105 SQUARE METERS, AND IN THE PRE-CONFLICT PERIOD, HOUSED 1,000 STUDENTS PER YEAR. IN FEBRUARY 2022, AS A RESULT OF THE RUSSIAN INVASION, ALL TRAINING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES STOPPED AND THE BUILDING WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY BOMBING. TO DATE, IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO CONDUCT ANY STATIC SURVEY OF THE STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO ASSESS THEIR POSSIBLE RECOVERY. AS THE UNIVERSITY’S PRESS SERVICE REPORTS, DESPITE THE CURRENT WAR CONDITIONS, THE V.N. KARAZIN ACADEMIC BODY IDEALLY CONTINUES THE EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH PROCESS. IT IS THEIR INTENTION TO REOPENING ITS DOORS WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS SHARING A RENEWED SPIRIT OF RESEARCH WITH INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION.

STRATEGY

SITE PROGRAM

THE EXISTING BUILDING IS PART OF AN URBAN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION, DIRECTLY FACING THE STREET AND OVERLOOKING A PUBLIC PARK TO THE SOUTH. THE STRUCTURE ALMOST ENTIRELY DESTROYED BY THE WAR, REQUIRES A NEW INITIATIVE THAT INVESTIGATES THE MAINTENANCE OF THE PUBLIC VIABILITY WHILE PROVIDING ATTRACTIVE, FUNCTIONAL AND FEASIBLE NEW SPACES.

CREATE IDENTITY

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BUILDING’S HERITAGE CALLS FOR A RENOVATION OF ITS FACADE IN A HISTORICAL CONTEXT WHILE USING THE PERIMETRIC VOLUME TO HOST A BRAND-NEW LAYOUT TO ENSURE FUNCTIONALITY, LIGHT AND FLEXIBLE INTERNAL SPACES. THE ADDITION OF A GLASS BALCONY ON THE COURTYARD SIDE WILL GUARANTEE THE RIGHT EQUILIBRIUM WHILE HELPING TO CONSERVE THE ORIGINAL PARTITION BEHIND IT.

ACTIVATE NEW URBAN ROLE

REFINING THE SPACE GIVEN BY ADJUSTING THE BASE OF THE BUILDING, WE HAVE DEVISED A SYSTEM THAT REDUCES THE STRUCTURAL DEPENDENCE ON GROUND, CREATING AN ATTRACTIVE COVERED PLAZA WHICH WILL OPEN NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION, AN ACTIVE SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY WHERE CULTURE MEETS THE CITY.

CONNECT SEMI-PUBLIC SPACES

MASSIVE STRUCTURES ON THE GROUND WERE DEVISED TO ACCOMMODATE THE HOUSING ABOVE, WHILE HIDDEN VERTICAL REINFORCEMENTS MAKE CONNECTION THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. THE ROOFTOP WAS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE SPACES FOR SOCIAL ENTERTAINMENT AND TO PROVIDE EVOCATIVE VIEWS OF THE CITY.

ADD GREEN HEART

A SIMPLE SHAPE JUXTAPOSED VOLUME ADAPTED TO THE EXISTING ONE WITH A LUSH GREEN TERRACE WITHIN WILL BE PLACED IN THE HEART OF THE BUILDING. THIS CENTRAL AREA PROVIDES A PANORAMIC VIEW CONNECTING THE COURTYARD AND BUILDING. THIS NEW VOLUME WILL HOST AN AUDITORIUM TO HOLD ACADEMIC LECTURES AND EVENTS AS WELL AS PUBLIC CONFERENCES, CONCERTS AND CULTURAL HAPPENINGS.

SHARING CULTURE PLATFORM FOR THE CITY

THE NEWLY EMPOWERED ACCESSIBILITY AND FUNCTIONALITY WILL TRANSFORM THE KARAZIN ECONOMICS FACULTY INTO A VIRTUOUS AND ATTRACTIVE PLACE, RESTORING IT’S ROLE AS A LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL CENTER. AN INSTITUTION FOCUSED ON INNOVATIVE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, WHILE PLAYING AN ACTIVE URBAN AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVE FOR THE NEW CITY PLANNED TO COME.

THE CREATIVE ECONOMIC PLATFORM

THE CITY OF THE FUTURE HAS DISTINCT DIFFERENCES FROM THE CONSIDERATIONS OF THE PAST. A CITY THAT ENCOURAGES AND INSPIRES THE IMAGINATION GOES WELL BEYOND THE URBAN ENGINEERING AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF ITS ICONIC BUILDINGS. THE IDEAL SCENARIO OFFERS SOCIAL AND URBAN SETTINGS THAT AFFORD PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET TO EXCHANGE IDEAS AND GATHER THROUGHOUT THE CITY. IN EUROPEAN CITIES AS IN MOST URBAN CONTEXTS, THE STREET REPRESENTS THE NETWORK, THE BORDER BETWEEN THE COLLECTIVE SPACE, PUBLIC LIFE AND THE PRIVATE SPHERE. THE BUILDING FACADE THEREFORE REPRESENTS A BORDER THAT SEPARATES PUBLIC EXISTENCE AND PRIVATE LIFE. IN ACCORD WITH THIS INTERPRETATION, THE FACADE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF URBAN ARCHITECTURE, IT’S DIALOGUE WITH ITS SURROUNDING SPEAKS VOLUMES THAT DEFINE THE URBAN ESTHETIC THAT EXISTS. WHEN REDESIGNING A BUILDING WITH A SIGNIFICANT HERITAGE, ONE SHOULD THEREFORE AVOID PURSUING TRANSGRESSION AND SEEK VARIATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL THEME, FOLLOWING UNWRITTEN BUT IMPRESSED RULES OF THE SITE DNA. BY THIS THINKING, THE DESIGN PROPOSAL MAINTAINS THE EXISTING FACADES OF THE STREET, RECONSTRUCTING IF NECESSARY AND GUARANTEES CONTINUITY AND HARMONY WITH THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT, RETURNING IT’S HISTORICAL IDENTITY. THE CONCEPT IS A STRONG RE-INTERPRETATION OF THE ORIGINAL, USING THE BUILDING AS A EXAMPLE, THE NEW KARAZIN SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS IS CONCEIVED AS AN URBAN FOCAL POINT, ATTRACTING STUDENTS, RESEARCHERS AND THE DIVERSE POPULATION OF KHARKIV. THE BUILDING ITSELF, OFFERS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AS WELL AS CULTURAL EVENTS IN THE PUBLIC EXCESS AREAS. THE MASSIVE STRUCTURE SEEMS TO DEFY GRAVITY WITH A DESIGN THAT INCORPORATES VANTAGE POINTS THAT SEEM SEPARATE FROM ITS GROUNDING, DRAWING THE VISITORS INSIDE. THE DESIGN CONCEPT INTRODUCE COMPONENTS THAT SEPARATE AND ELIMINATE THE BASE AND PARTS OF THE BUILDING NO LONGER NECESSARY. THIS OPENS UP A COMPLETELY NEW PERSPECTIVE IN RELATION TO ITS SURROUNDINGS. THE REMOVAL OF THE BASE OF THE BUILDING CREATES A COVERED PLAZA WHICH HOSTS PUBLIC SERVICES LIKE THE MAIN FOYER, A LIBRARY, STUDY AND READING CORNERS, CAFÈ AND A SMALL RESTAURANT. THE AUDITORIUM AND ITS GARDEN ARE SITUATED ON THE TOP FLOOR. THE STAIRS IN FRONT PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE AS AN ENTRANCE AND DIRECT CONNECTION FOR PUBLIC ACCESS. THE PARK AND SEMI-PRIVATE GARDEN COURTYARD, ALLOW THE USE OF ALL MAIN SERVICES OF THE GROUND LEVEL WHEN THE EDUCATION AREA OF THE BUILDING ARE CLOSED. THE DESIGN OF THE FLOORS ABOVE THE MAIN LEVEL ARE ACHIEVED USING A NEW LAYOUT WITH ADDED STOREYS IN THE EXTERNAL STRUCTURE, TO ENSURE FUNCTIONAL, CLEAN AND FLEXIBLE INTERNAL SPACES. ADDITIONAL CLASSROOMS WITH VARIED DIMENSION AND MOVABLE PARTITIONS, ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES, RESEARCH CLASSROOMS, MEETING, STUDY ROOMS, LEISURE AREAS AND A PROFESSORS AREA ARE PLANNED. THE ROOFTOP OF THE BUILDING IS ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT OF THE RECONSTRUCTION, DOUBLING AS A MEETING PLACE FOR LEISURE AND ENHANCING COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL RELATIONS. THE NEW KHARKIV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS, NAMED AFTER V.N. KARAZIN, IS DESIGNED AS A LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL CENTER, FOCUSED ON INNOVATIVE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, WHILE PLAYING AN ACTIVE AND STRATEGIC ROLE FOR NEW CITY PLANNING. GIVEN THE CHANCE, ORDINARY PEOPLE MAKE THE EXTRAORDINARY HAPPEN, THE NEW ECONOMICS FACULTY, WILL BE THAT INTERACTIVE PLATFORM TO RE-SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE NATION AND STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONS WITH THE ENTIRE WORLD.
